Renovation // Maldon

Meeting our clients in the gallery for the first time, I was so inspired by their story. The husband and wife shared with me how they had purchased the wife's grandparent's home in Maldon and were renovating this home, to move there and raise their family.

Her memories were so fond of her childhood. Completely free and happy, with memories that when shared with me, I felt like I was reading an Enid Blyton book filled with laughter, whimsy and a spirit that is commonly shared in stories when growing up in country Victoria.

Our clients were relocating from interstate and were already at lock up stage of their renovation when we met. They are completely adorable, so much fun, and so excited for their home project, it was infectious! I myself was super excited to be part of it.

Our initial consultation was at the site, where I was able to get a sense of the space for one of the key principles of design, scale. As the ceilings were raked, and there was a lot of natural light flooding the space, the materials and furniture pieces had to be very considered.

There was one pertinent plant in the garden that launched our design style, it was a protea plant. This protea was the original plant from the garden that has remained intact and is so unbelievably special to our clients. I set to work on creating a palette for the pieces that would highlight the protea both outside, and inside the home.

Following the site visit, I conceptualised the spaces with Mood Boards to present to the clients.

This was the fun part! Sharing with our clients the pieces that would make their house a home.

We decided to colour drench the formal living room at the entrance of the home. This space is intended for the parents, to entertain with their friends and have a luxurious, yet cosy feeling. We selected the Molmic Palisades Sofa for its curved lines and single sofa cushion. Because of this single sofa cushion, it provided an elongated look. Upholstered in Wortley Bliss Bronze fabric - it is an absolute showstopper!

Having a velvet sofa, we leaned into a more organic look for the Molmic Purcell Chair in Ashley Wilde Agulla Terracotta fabric from the Palma Collection. This fabric is a combination of cotton and linen and is a heavy domestic fabric - being the perfect companion as an Occasional Chair. Elegant, yet robust. The combination of timber floorboards, bronze velvet, taupe, pale blue and gold makes for an extremely luxurious and elegant formal living room.

As this is a large open plan formal living area, kitchen/dining and family living area, a sense of cohesion was imperative. We move through to the dining area, adjacent to the kitchen, and it is bathed in warmth and texture with the Timber Co Newbridge Dining Table in Rough Sawn Messmate. Our clients opted for the clear stained legs to provide continuity with the timber.
The Timber Co Newbridge Dining Table is made in Bendigo, exclusively for us at Make Your House A Home.
Drawing on the protea, we selected the GlobeWest Jules Dining Armchairs in the colour Brick. This colour was also selected as it has a relationship to the recycled bricks at the fireplace.

When our clients shared the colour and style of their kitchen, I was in complete awe of them. They had such impeccable style. There really was only one stool that wouldn’t compete with the kitchen, but tuck up under the bench discreetly, and in a high design style. It is the GlobeWest Sketch Odd Upholstered Barstool in Camel Leather and Light Oak. Our clients love these stools, as they also find them easy to clean with children.

With a home like this, our clients wanted quality pieces, and they selected Molmic for all of their Sofas for the craftmanship, and the ability to select from a wide range of fabrics. In the family living room, the Molmic Lille Loose Cover Sofa in Zepel Naturama Putty Fabric was an ideal choice. As the covers are machine washable, this has proven to be a wise investment. Our clients love that they can pop them in the washing machine, and so easily get them back on, and their Sofa is beyond comfortable. This spot just in front of the open fire was always intended to be a spot that they could enjoy all year round.

Knowing how they live as a family, the clients selected the Molmic Dempsey Sofa for their living room that sits just behind the family living room. It is upholstered in Profile Adonis Flax fabric and has an organic look and feel with the textured cushions from Baya Living.

It has been a few months now since the clients have moved in. I went back recently to see what life is like with all of their beautiful pieces in their most beautiful home, and they were just beaming. This home wraps you up the moment you walk in the door for the warmth, but it is the family that are at the heart of this home. They are warm and kind, and their home is a true reflection of their spirit, that so generously lives on from generations before.

Our client kindly shared this testimonial.....

“We couldn't recommend Couture For Living Design Services more. Marnie was an absolute pleasure to work with from the moment we sat on a couch in the shop with a 3 year old in tow! We were so uncertain on how to furnish our new space! Marnie visited the build and took the time to understand our connection with the home given it was my grandparents' home, our vision, along with the need to function as a family with a toddler and two pre-teen children, she understood the brief and provided options that represented all we had asked for.

Absolutely stunning recommendations that have made our house a home.

The bonus of the service is this: it takes the guess work out; it saved you so much time going from shop to shop and dealing with salesperson after salesperson and everything was delivered at once!

We honestly appreciate the time and thought Marnie put into our home.”

What a privilege it was for me to work with the clients, who placed their trust in me, in the Couture For Living Design Service, and with their home. This is a home that is filled with so much character and steeped in family history. What a beautiful story.
